HISTORY
Durban was founded in 2011 by Glen Cherry and Collin Ricks as a relationship-driven real estate development company. Initially focused on single tenant, net leased assets, the company has since developed hundreds of such properties in more 30 states. Over the course of the last decade, Durban has also strategically diversified both its focus and portfolio to include multi-tenant retail, mixed-use commercial, office, and residential developments.
In 2014, Durban entered the residential space with a 64 unit multi-family project and brought on Ryland Pond to serve as General Counsel. With a single point of management for all legal matters, the company quickly recognized greater efficiencies throughout the development process, as well as increased productivity for the acquisitions team.
2015 was a watershed year for Durban – in addition to developing its first single family home, the company moved its headquarters to 106 Foster Ave. – an adaptive re-use of an old warehouse building in the SouthEnd neighborhood of Charlotte. The project ignited a passion throughout the leadership team for the redevelopment of urban infill properties and has since resulted in the acquisition and re-positioning of multiple properties, including four in the SouthEnd neighborhood alone.
By 2017, what had begun as a series of passion projects had fully evolved into a development model being deployed in urban markets across several states. Ted Barnes joined the team, taking on the role of company President and utilizing his 30+ years of real estate experience to spearhead not only the mixed-used projects, but the development of open air grocery anchored shopping centers as well.
While Durban’s focus and core competencies have evolved and expanded since its inception, the driving force behind the business remains its relationships. Today, Durban continues to programmatically develop single tenant net lease properties throughout the US, and takes great pride in working alongside not just the national retailers, but also blossoming operators looking to roll out strategic growth plans. Ultimately, in all its endeavors, Durban seeks to forge lasting relationships with both its clients and the communities it serves.
